Note: You do NOT need to speak Portuguese to take this course. All literature will be in English translation.
This course is an introduction to the exciting literature of Brazil, and it will address a number of themes, paying particular attention to the invention of national identity; the history of slavery; gender and its relationship to power; Catholicism and candomblé; “Third World” capitalism and class struggle; and the politics of samba and carnival as represented in the national literature. We will pay particular attention to the writing of the great 19th-century writer Machado de Assis.
