Title: INTRODUCTION TO POETRY WRITING

Section: 04

Semester: Fall - 2014

Credits: 3

Description:
Poetry Writing: we will experiment with words. We will indulge in the pleasures of nuanced language. We will energize our vocabularies - and make our language do something new and surprising!

This course is designed to introduce students to the craft of writing poetry in a workshop environment. Through reading and writing exercises, and through substantive revision, students will learn the basics of prosody (the music of poetry) and practice foundations of poetic craft such as image, metaphor, voice and diction. We will also discuss and practice different approaches toward form, line, and stanza. Because good writers are first good readers, our writing exercises will be paired with literary selections that we will read and discuss from a writer’s perspective.
