Course details
Name: ENGL - 207
Title: WORLD LIT: VOICES OF TRADITION AND CHALLENGE
Section: 02
Semester: Fall - 2014
Credits: 3
Description:
This world literature (literature in translation) course embraces the theme of "Voices of Tradition and Challenge" in two ways: by offering a comparison of Western/non-Western literature, and by examining texts that feature challenges to social traditions. The first unit, called Polygamy, compares two novels: The Unbearable Lightness of Being by Czech writer Milan Kundera, and a novel by a Senegalese woman writer, Mariama Ba (So Long a Letter). In the second unit, Tempest, we will compare Shakespeare's play, The Tempest, to Aimé Césaire's (Martinique) postcolonial reading of Shakespeare's drama, A Tempest. The final unit, Magical Realism, offers the opportunity to study several short stories that employ magical realism, allowing us to explore the ways in which authors employ fantasy in order to make socio-political critiques. Students will leave this course with a better appreciation for the ways in which ideas and genres cross national borders; learning objectives include close reading, critical thinking/argumentation, and excellence in writing. The online section of this course will be asynchronous and self-paced, with bi-weekly due dates.
