Description:
In this course we will read fiction (short stories and novels), as well as non-fiction prose (memoirs, personal and political essays, and some theoretical texts) by women writers from around the world, focusing on contemporary writings (20th and 21st century). We will examine if there are commonalities of concerns, ideas, themes, writing styles etc in these works by writers from around the globe, something that marks this work out as "women's writing" or not


Some examples of texts/authors are:

Afzal-Khan, ed. Shattering the Stereotypes: Muslim Women Speak Out.
Aidoo: No Sweetness Here (short stories)
Anzaldua: Making Face, Making Soul – Haciendo Caras (theory/fiction/non-fiction)
Chopin: The Awakening (novel)
hooks, bel Black Looks (theoretical essays)
Howe, Florence and Jean Casella, eds. Almost Touching the Skies (fiction and non-fiction
Excerpts)
Riverbend. Baghdad Burning (memoir/blog)
Roy, Arundhati Power Politics (political essays)

We will complement some of our readings with film viewing and discussion, and students will be expected to hand in 1 page written responses to texts, take a midterm and final exam, and hand in a short critical paper at the end of term.
