Title: CLASS RACE ETHNICITY IN FILM

Section: 01

Semester: Spring - 2015

Credits: 3

Description:
This course will survey the strategies used by contemporary European and American filmmakers to represent immigration issues. We will consider the narrational style, narrative structure, mise-en-scene, mechanisms of identification and system of gazes deployed in a variety of films made since 1980. Through assigned readings and class discussions, we will seek to answer the following questions: How do contemporary film narratives position the viewer in relation to immigrant characters and issues? To what extent do they implicate the viewer in the mistreatment and misrepresentation of immigrants? How can film language be used to intervene in contemporary debates about immigration? The list of screened films may include Babel, Children of Men, Code Unknown, El Norte and Lone Star.
