Description:
This course will explore the diverse and fascinating world of English prose before the rise of the novel. Ranging from the Middle Ages to the dawn of the eighteenth century, the course includes study of authors such as Thomas Malory, Thomas More, Elizabeth I, Philip Sidney, Francis Bacon, John Donne, John Milton, Thomas Hobbes, and Margaret Cavendish, and it encompasses genres from science fiction and sermons to letters and prose romance. Across the course, the guiding concern will be to consider where the English novel comes from, and what it left behind.
