Description:
A study of the great Irish writer James Joyce (1882-1941), centering on three books: the short story collection DUBLINERS, the coming-of-age-novel A PORTRAIT OF THE ARTIST AS A YOUNG MAN, and the great novel ULYSSES. We will approach Joyce's work from a variety of angles, looking at it in the context of Irish history and politics, Joyce's own aesthetic theories and narrative strategies, Joyce in the context of modernism, and changing notions of gender and sexuality.
