Description:
The course will examine the codes and conventions of four major film genres: the psychological horror film, the family melodrama, the screwball comedy, and the gangster film. We will look at the evolution of each genre--from its classic form to contemporary revisions--emphasizing the historical context and the influence of individual directors. Students will be able to select an additional genre as the subject for their final papers. Requirements: attendance, including active, engaged class participation; readings; additional screenings of films/videos outside of class; Canvas postings; take-home mid-term; final paper.
