What did the ancients believe about their gods, and what did it mean to believe in the ancient world? After a turn to Roman epic with Virgil and Ovid, we will read several non-classical mythological works, including the Norse Eddas, African myths of origin, the Buddhist Chinese adventure story "Monkey," and the Old English medieval story of Beowulf.
