Course details

Name: enjr - 317

Title: FEATURE WRITING

Section: 01

Semester: Spring - 2015

Credits: 3

Description:
The journalism course that naturally follows ENJR 210 News Reporting in the Journalism writing sequence. 210 is a prereq and must be taken before--not simultaneously--with 317. This very intensively hands-on course develops the craft of writing feature stories for daily journalism with an emphasis on print, though newer electronic platforms will also be included. These stories emphasize the human interest, "feeling" side of journalism as opposed to the more rigid 5Ws format of news reporting. Assignments which will all be done off-campus include the profile, timeless "evergreen" soft feature, portrait of a neighborhood, and most of all the news-feature written off the news giving the human dimension to breaking news stories. There will be writing and rewriting throughout the semester as you hone your own individual style and voice yet within the parameters of responsible journalism including accuracy, avoiding libel, making deadline, avoiding plagiarism and others. Assignments will be longer and allow more writing freedom than the deadline-driven urgency of news reporting.
