This class will address several outstanding British novels of the mid-to-late nineteenth century, by such major authors as Charles Dickens, George Eliot, Elizabeth Gaskell, and Robert Louis Stevenson. Issues we’ll explore in these works include the development of nineteenth-century literary realism, the Victorian novel as a mode of social satire and critique, the impact of new forms of publication and the rapid growth of the reading public on the novel form, and changing views on women and the family. We'll also look at the development of a wildly popular new genre in the 1860s, sensation fiction (the ancestor to modern crime fiction, detective fiction, and horror).
