Name: ENGL - 263
Title: ART OF DRAMA
Section: 01
Semester: Fall - 2015
Credits: 3
Description:
This course is an introduction to dramatic literature, exploring major eras, movements, and writers from ancient Greece to the present day. We will examine the impact of historical and political context on work written for the stage through study of plays, critical theory, and performance history; the course will play particular attention to contemporary interpretations of earlier plays. Students will leave this course with a clear understanding of how to read a play script and a deep appreciation for the ways drama serves as a mirror to the range of human experience. Plays we study will come from a wide range of dramatists and will include work by Euripides, Plautus, Kalidasa, Shakespeare, Chekhov, Molière, Charles Ludlam, Sarah Ruhl, Lynn Nottage, Tony Kushner, and Richard Schechner. Assignments will include a review of a staged play, a short paper, and a final project.
