Description:
2015 marks the centennial year of Orson Welles's birth and Special Topics in Film this semester will be devotedly entirely to studying the films of Orson Welles. We will begin with a discussion of his work in theater and radio and then study his Hollywood films (including Citizen Kane, The Magnificent Ambersons, The Lady from Shanghai and Touch of Evil) as well as the work he produced in Europe (including Othello, The Trial and Chimes at Midnight). We will analyze Welles's formal style, situating its shifting dynamics within specific production contexts, as well as the themes that recur throughout his oeuvre. Weekly readings with mid-term and final essays will be required.
