Description:
The craft of news reporting with emphasis on the hands-on basics such as interviewing, writing to deadline, the 5Ws, the classic inverted pyramid organization of a story, meticulous accuracy, using the "clips" in researching, wire service writing style, avoiding libel and invasion of privacy, and others. This is a highly participatory course with steady writing throughout the semester. There is a textbook for guidance, but the emphasis is on actually practicing the craft. While the emphasis is on print, the newer electronic platforms will be included. Required for the Journalism Minor, but open to all students whose enrollment is encouraged.
