Course details
Name: ENWR - 205
Title: CREATIVE NONFICTION
Section: 02
Semester: Fall - 2015
Credits: 3
Description:
This writing-intensive, seminar-style course will deal with the techniques of creative non-fiction, with emphasis on "creative". We will read examples of successful creative nonfiction. Written pieces will include a first-person memoir; a character sketch or profile; a word-picture of an urban neighborhood; perhaps a local travel piece; other pieces as the class desires. This is not a grammar course. Techniques emphasized will include showing, not telling; writing originally and avoiding cliches; pacing; having a story "arc" with a beginning, middle and end; holding readers' interest; perhaps using suspense. However, within these and other parameters of good writing, you will be encouraged to write in and to develop your own, individual voice. Writing will be shared with classmates who will offer constructive, supportive critiques.
