Description:
In this course we will consider how post-1945 film culture addressed the social upheavals associated with postwar reconstruction, counter-cultural protest in the West, political dissidence in the East, and anti-colonial liberation struggles.
We will look at masterworks of global cinema by acclaimed
directors such as Roberto Rosselini, Alain Resnais, Milos Forman, Ousmane Sembene and Abbas Kiarostami, tracing the influence of realism, modernism and nationalism on film aesthetics. Assignments will include a midterm, two short papers and a research paper.
