Course details

Name: ENGL - 260

Title: ART OF POETRY

Section: 01

Semester: Fall - 2015

Credits: 3

Description:
This course will survey a broad spectrum of poetry by a diverse group of poets, attempting to discover the true power of poetry and how it reflects and also influences culture.

We will examine a number of poetic forms, from the traditional to the contemporary, including visual and sound poetry. We also will explore the inspiration behind poetic creation, reading works that stem from altered states of consciousness, or, conversely, are products of the everyday. We will read political poetry in order to probe the connection between language and activism. And finally, we will study poems that engage in radical experimentation, moving beyond traditional verse, including contemporary works that could not exist without the internet or social media. We will frame our studies with poetic theory and criticism by an equally diverse and divergent collection of writers.

Much of the class will be discussion driven as we analyze the poems and their cultural and theoretical contexts. In addition to analytical essays, there will be creative writing assignments and experiments. Whenever possible, we will listen to recordings of the poets reading their own work. All required texts will be posted to Canvas.
