Title: SPECIAL TOPICS: MEMOIR WRITING

Section: 01

Semester: Fall - 2015

Credits: 3

Description:
In this class, we will look at the works of a wide range of authors who have turned the lens inward to write soul-searching autobiographical narratives, ranging from the humorous and witty to the deep and raw. We will learn how writers deploy voice and research in their memoirs as they explore immigrant life (Gary Shteyngart and Edwidge Danticat), drug or alcohol abuse (David Carr and Mary Karr), or growing up in various regions of the U.S. (Harry Crews, Chuck Klosterman, and Wes Moore). This is a writing-intensive workshop during which we will take elements from students’ lives—their experiences—and elevate the narratives to universal themes.
