Description:
The course is an in-depth survey of the major fictional works of JRR Tolkien, The Silmarillion, The Hobbit, and The Lord of the Rings, as a created but coherent and comparable mythology. Particular emphasis is placed on the close reading of these texts, but their literary influences and sources in traditional mythologies, and their extensive representation and adaptation in film, music, and art, will also be studied.
