Description:
This course addresses the emergence of Young Adult Literature as a genre that includes established classics as well as contemporary fiction, non-fiction, and graphic novels. We will examine the historical and cultural contexts surrounding the genre’s development; discuss these works through multiple lenses; study relevant criticism; and apply literary theory to explore portrayals of adolescence. Readings will include works by 19th century, mid-20th-century, and contemporary authors, including several from the following:

19th-Century Authors: Louisa May Alcott, Rudyard Kipling, Lucy Maud Montgomery, Robert Louis Stevenson, Mark Twain, and Horatio Alger.

Mid-20th-Century Authors: J. D. Salinger, Sylvia Plath, Dodie Smith, and Richard Bradford.

Contemporary Authors: Walter Dean Meyers, Patrick Ness, Ursula K. LeGuin, Terry Pratchett, Julia Alvarez, Julius Lester, Ismael Beah, Laurie Halse Anderson, Sherman Alexie, Jamaica Kincaid, An Na, Jane Yolen, Lois Lowry, John Green, Rainbow Rowell, Neil Gaiman, Tsitsi Dangarembga, John Green, Gene Luen Yang, and Marjane Satrapi.
