Title: TEACHING WRITING IN PUBLIC SCHOOLS

Section: 00

Semester: Spring - 2016

Credits: 3

Description:
This course explores the complex dimensions of teaching writing from both practical and theoretical viewpoints. While we will build a foundational understanding of the history of theorized approaches to writing instruction, we will also consider the current pressures of standardized testing, the grading burden, and other classroom realities. Students will conduct research on writing issues, read foundational composition scholarship, respond to student writing, and experiment with approaches to teaching writing. Ultimately, this class will challenge us to carve out a writing pedagogy that is at once infused with theoretical considerations, but also grounded in realistic teaching environments.

Can be used as elective credit toward Public and Professional Writing Minor. 3 hours lecture.

Prerequisites: ENWR 204 or ENWR 206 or ENWR 207 or ENWR 208 or ENWR 220 or ENGL 201 or ENGL 270 or ENGL 280.
