Description:
This course is dedicated to intensive, advanced work on academic and formal writing. Students will develop their skills as writers through short writing and editing exercises and through work on essays. We will devote sustained attention to achieving clarity of prose, with particular emphasis on editing skills, grammar, syntax, and mechanics, while also exploring questions of style. Students will have the opportunity to analyze their strengths and weaknesses as writers, to develop strategies for editing and polishing, and to enhance their abilities to recognize and make stylistic choices. We will read prescriptive and descriptive texts about mechanics and grammar, research on language practices, and both classic and contemporary examples to evaluate for style and clarity.
