Title: MAJOR FILM GENRES

Section: 01

Semester: Fall - 2016

Credits: 3

Description:
This semester, Major Film Genres will focus on Hollywood during the 1930s with close attention paid to three genres—the musical, the western and the topical. We will study Vaudeville inspired musicals such as Whoopie! as well as musicals produced at RKO, Warners and MGM. Our study of the western will focus on its development during the early sound years culminating with Stagecoach in 1939. Topicals, many made at Warner Bros., often drew upon headline stories and helped create a studio-era realism characteristic of American film in the 1930s. Films likely to be screened include Top Hat, Footlight Parade, Cimarron, Five Star Final, They Won’t Forget, Black Legion.
