Description:
"I am myself the matter of my book," wrote Montaigne, inaugurating the essay form for modern readers. In this class, students will read and analyze model essays—from Montaigne to James Baldwin, David Foster Wallace, and Marilynne Robinson—and write their own essays, based upon assigned prompts. Part of each class will be conducted as a writing workshop. Weekly writing (and reading) assignments will be given.
