Section: 05
Semester: Fall - 2016
Credits: 3
Description:
This course will focus on the writing that shaped, and reflected, England’s transition from a slave-owning and trading culture to one that embraced the abolition of slavery as a moral imperative of national importance. We will work with first-person narratives about slavery, consider the representations of people of color in canonical and underread literature, and study the political writing that addressed the issue of abolition. We'll read poetry published during the Romantic era and slave narratives along with novels and screen "Belle" and "Mansfield Park" along with other relevant texts. Students will design a series of writing and research projects
