The emphasis is on reading and writing modern creative nonfiction, with the main focus on various forms of the personal essay, memoir, travel, character and place sketches, opinion. Students will read, analyze, and discuss contemporary published examples of the genre; write extensively; and participate in guided workshop-style discussions of their own and others' work, providing and receiving constructive feedback. Lectures highlight developing craft (such as narrative arc, character development, dialogue, backstory, pacing, structure, etc.), and students are encouraged to identify and express their own writing style and voice. Revision and rewriting are stressed. Midterm assessment and final writing portfolio are required in lieu of exams.
