Description:
This course examines several of Shakespeare’s major tragedies and romances as cultural productions reflecting the concerns, anxieties, values, and ideologies of Shakespeare's England. While we attend to the development of tragedy and romance as genres, we also give careful consideration to social issues such as constructions of gender and class, contests for political power, and the contexts of Renaissance performance. Requirements: 3 papers, discussion posts, and participation.
