Description:
Science fiction is a “what if—?” genre, an exciting literature of ideas most broadly defined as “the impact of science and technology on society.” This course is a survey of mainly twentieth-century science fiction, investigating topics ranging from alien encounters and artificial life to utopias and dystopias, time and space travel, disasters and apocalypses, and evolution. We’ll be reading stories from an anthology, as well as a novel and some background material. Requirements: two short papers, a midterm, and a final exam.
