Course details

Name: ENGL - 263

Title: ART OF DRAMA

Section: 01

Semester: Spring - 2017

Credits: 3

Description:
This course surveys the major forms, features, eras, and writers of world drama from ancient times to the present. Because plays are group activities, they tell us and their audiences what matters most to the cultures that produce them, not just what matters to their authors. By looking at a range of such performances (from Ancient Greek and Japanese forms to modern American, British, African, and European selections) through different historical, geographical, ethnic, and other perspectives, students will gain a broad appreciation for world drama and a deep understanding of its many expressions of the tragedy and comedy of the human condition. Students can expect to write two papers (approximately 6-8 pp each) and take a midterm and final exam. Class participation is expected and encouraged.
