This course will introduce students to auteur theory (the director as “author” of his/her films) as a tool for film analysis, focusing on the works of three expatriate directors known for their depiction of the dark forces lurking in an apparently ordered and benign world: Alfred Hitchcock, Roman Polanski, and Stanley Kubrick, We will study characteristic elements--recurring plot structures, character types, themes, and visual/aural style—in films from representative moments in their careers. And we will examine the strengths and weaknesses of auteur theory. Films in the course include Strangers on a Train, The Birds, Vertigo, Lolita, Repulsion, Chinatown, and Full Metal Jacket,
Requirements:
In-class screenings; active class participation; weekly readings and postings on Blackboard; screenings of DVDs outside of class; mid-term and final.
