Description:
Special Topics this semester will focus on the period of the Hollywood blacklist, a time during which screen artists on the political left fell victim to persecution at the hands of the government and studio management. We will study the political content and visual style of films made by blacklisted artists such as Albert Maltz, Dalton Trumbo and Edward Dmytryk. We will study the work of the House Un-American Activities Committee and the economic, political and cultural implications of the blacklist for the studios and the film community. Films likely to be screened include Pride of the Marines, Body and Soul, Force of Evil and Crossfire.
