Description:
This course will explore writing practices, research, and theory that will help to prepare you to teach writing in the secondary English classroom. During the semester, we will experience: 1) strategies for developing writing activities and ways to address various aspects of writing instruction (including the use of mentor texts, teaching the argumentative essay, and ways of addressing language/grammar in the English classroom); 2) methods for assessing student writing; 3) ways of establishing a writing culture, rituals, and practices in your classroom; 4) a sense of what others have said and are saying about teaching writing; and 5) an awareness of some of the historical, current, and potential future issues surrounding the teaching of writing in the secondary English classroom. Please note that this is an online course.
