This course explores the pleasures and imaginative devices of poetry, from Homer to Gwendolyn Brooks. Students will become more sophisticated readers and listeners: we will analyze such aspects of poetic language as metaphor, meter, rhyme, irony, and enjambment. This course will help any student who finds poetry a bit intimidating, and for those students who already find delight in poetry, this course will enrich your understanding of poetic craft.
