Course details
Name: ENWR - 212
Title: INTRODUCTION TO POETRY WRITING
Section: 02
Semester: Fall - 2017
Credits: 3
Description:
Poetry, from Homer to Young Thug, has been about using syllables and words as magic spells or drugs. OK, it's more complicated than that. But in this course, we will "play around with syllables" (as W. H. Auden had it) as we study the craft of writing poetry in a workshop environment. Through writing exercises and readings drawn from a variety of aesthetic traditions, students will learn basic principles of prosody and composition, fundamentals of form and construction—taking our operating principle from Yeats's lines: "A line will take us hours maybe; / Yet if it does not seem a moment’s thought, / Our stitching and unstitching has been naught."
