Description:
This course examines several of Shakespeare’s major tragedies and romances as cultural productions reflecting the concerns, anxieties, values, and ideologies of Shakespeare}s England. While we attend to the development of tragedy and romance as genres, we focus on social problems such as constructions of gender and class, the complex identity of the hero and the scapegoat, and the contests for political power, seen through the development of tragic patterns and concerns from play to play. Requirements: 2 papers (5 and 10 pages, respectively, the latter involving research), a midterm and a final exam. Class discussion is expected and encouraged.
