Course details
Name: ENWR - 220
Title: WRITING IN THE MAJOR: THE ANALYTIC ESSAY
Section: 01
Semester: Fall - 2017
Credits: 3
Description:
Organized around individual instructors’ chosen topic or theme, this course will focus on the development of students’ skills in writing a thesis-driven analytic essay. Students work with literary and cultural texts to strengthen their reading and analytic abilities, using those skills to construct sophisticated arguments. Because the course is designed for English majors, students will learn and apply the vocabulary, writing conventions, research methods, and documentation practices of the discipline. Students will write 5000-6000 words of formal prose and regularly revise their essays with feedback from peers and the instructor. ENWR220 meets the Graduation Writing Requirement. Recommended but not required as a precursor to Pursuits of English. For English majors only. This section of 220 will examine how the idea of "ugliness" has been constructed across cultures and centuries from ancient times to modern, in terms of gender and sexuality, class, and ethnic distinctions, and social, political, and economic exclusion (including genocide). Readings are generally short but revealing excerpts, and include literary, historical, and "artistic" (painting, sculpture) examples, culminating in a look at whether biased behavior itself may be considered "ugly."
