Course details
Name: ENGL - 210
Title: MYTH AND LITERATURE
Section: 01
Semester: Fall - 2017
Credits: 3
Description:
What did the ancients believe about their gods, and how did they register that belief in forms like the epic and drama? We will explore these issues by beginning with the oldest European stories about gods and mortals by Homer and Hesiod. After a turn to Greek drama (with Euripides) and Roman epic (with Ovid), we will read several non-classical mythological works, including the Norse Eddas, African myths of origin, the Buddhist Chinese adventure story "Monkey," and the most ancient long story of them all, "Gilgamesh." Assignments will include two essays, two exams, regular quizzes, and some shorter writing assignments.
