Description:
This course will focus on American poetry by paying close attention to the work of individual poets as well as movements they might represent. John Ashbery, Robert Lowell, Elizabeth Bishop, Theodore Roethke, Sylvia Plath, Audre Lorde, Mark Strand, Louise Bogan, Sandra Cisneros, Robert Frost, Marianne Moore, Adrienne Rich, Anne Sexton, Leslie Marmon Silko are some of the poets we may read. Class discussions, small and large group work and analysis will be supplemented with critical/theoretical essays as students keep an online journal in response to the poems. There will be a formal research paper as well as a final exam.
