Description:
This course is concerned with the representation of gender and sexuality in Hollywood action cinema of the 1980s and 1990s. Lectures and readings will engage with queer theory and feminist theory, as well as issues specific to the genre and time period such as Reagan-era politics, the rise of the female action hero, homoeroticism and body spectacle, changing codes of masculinity and biracial buddy films. Screenings will include The Terminator, First Blood, Lethal Weapon, Point Break and The Long Kiss Goodnight. You will be assigned weekly essays about screened films, a midterm and a research paper.
