Course details
Name: ENWR - 212
Title: INTRODUCTON TO POETRY WRITING
Section: 02
Semester: Spring - 2018
Credits: 3
Description:
Adrienne Rich declares in her groundbreaking poem, “Diving into the Wreck,” that “[t]he words are purposes. / The words are maps.” In my Introduction to Poetry course, we unearth the purpose of our words, mapping where they want to take us. By reading diverse poets with various racial, ethnic, gender, and sexual identities, we explore how to craft poems that connect both emotionally and intellectually with readers. We also discuss the role of the poet in the United States and what it means to create art in our sociopolitical moment. We write, workshop, revise our poems. And we have fun! The best poems are inventive and imaginative, and I encourage students to approach poetry writing with a sense of wonder and playfulness.
