Description:
This course replaces Pursuits of English as the required course of the major. Students will learn how literary theory helps us engage with questions about gender, sexuality, and race, especially in popular culture. Required texts are Jane Austen's __Sense and Sensibility__ (we'l watch parts of the film adaptations) and Nervous Conditions by __Tsitsi Dangarembga__. In addition to short essays and a mid-term paper, students will have the opportunity to design their own reading unit based on texts of their choosing.
