Course details

Name: ENGL - 114

Title: UTOPIA AND DYSTOPIA

Section: 01

Semester: Fall - 2018

Credits: 3

Description:
With contemporary social upheavals, uncertain political futures, natural disasters and terrorism, many of us find it difficult to talk calmly about the world in which we live. This course will explore the emergence of dystopian texts (from the utopian genre) as imagined universes in which oppressive societal control, constant surveillance, dehumanization, and the illusion of a perfect society are maintained through corporate, bureaucratic, technological, or totalitarian control. Dystopias, through exaggerated worst-case scenarios, make a criticism about a current trend, societal norm, or political systems and allow us to envision ways we may resist and start anew. Some possible titles we may read are: Fahrenheit 451, Brave New World, 1984, Little Brother, The Hunger Games, Divergent, Glory O’Brien’s History of the Future, Feed, Proxy, and Landscape With Invisible Hand. Dystopian films may also be shown.
