Section: 01
Semester: Fall - 2018
Credits: 3
Description:
This course will introduce students to auteur theory (the director as primary “author” of his/her films) as a tool for film analysis, focusing on the works of three directors whose careers span decades: Roman Polanski, Stanley Kubrick, and Robert Altman. We will study characteristic elements--recurring plot structures, character types, themes, and visual/aural style—in films from representative moments in their careers. And we will examine the strengths and weaknesses of auteur theory. Films in the course include Repulsion, Rosemary’s Baby, Chinatown, Lolita, Full Metal Jacket, Tbe Shining, M*A*S*H, McCabe and Mrs. Miller, and Gosford Park.
