Description:
History of American Film to 1945 surveys the American cinema as industry and art form up to the end of World War II. We will study the formation of the movie business from its origins to the "golden age" of the studio system in the 1940s. Close attention will be paid to key figures—directors, stars and industry executives—and to the development of the classical Hollywood style. We will also study examples of American experimental cinema from the 1920s and 1930s as well as documentary filmmaking in response to the Great Depression and WWII. Weekly readings in film history will accompany a diverse set of films. Prerequisite: ENFL 208 Introduction to Film.
