Title: INTRO TO LIT: UTOPIA AND DYSTOPIA

Section: 01

Semester: Spring - 2019

Credits: 3

Description:
This course surveys the history of utopian and dystopian literature, beginning with Sir Thomas More's "Utopia" (1516) and canonical works by writers such as Jonathan Swift and H.G. Wells. We will look at some of the major dystopian novels of the 20th Century (Brave New World, Nineteen Eighty-Four, The Handmaid's Tale) and conclude with examples from contemporary fiction and film.

We will ask questions about the nature of utopia; whether utopia necessarily leads to dystopia; how these works reflect historical concerns about gender, sexuality, and reproduction; the role of race and ethnicity in dividing populations; how technology can serve the interest of state power; how the human character is affected by political repression; and other questions central to the genre.

This course meets the Gen Ed C2. Literature requirement. The course is writing-intensive and at least three essays are required.
