Title: MAJOR FILM MOVEMENTS
Section: 01
Semester: Spring - 2019
Credits: 3
Description:
This course will survey two of the most important national cinemas of the past 25 years: Iranian cinema and Romanian cinema. Iranian cinema is acclaimed for its combination of realism with reflexivity, philosophical inquiry and radical gender politics, while Romanian cinema is renowned for its minimalist realism, complex historicization of Communism and rigorous spectatorial ethics. We will relate the masterworks of celebrated Iranian and Romanian auteurs such as Abbas Kiarostami, Jafar Panahi and Cristian Mungiu to their national contexts, while also addressing the differences between the domestic and foreign reception of their work. Assignments will include a midterm, weekly online analyses and a research paper.
