Name: ENGL - 347

Title: VICTORIAN POETRY

Section: 01

Semester: Spring - 2019

Credits: 3

Description:
During the Victorian period (1837-1901), poems appeared every day across Great Britain in books, newspapers, and magazines; compilations of sentimental poetry called ‘gift books’ quickly sold out of stores every Christmas; nonsense poetry for children was invented and sold well, too; and it was a great age of formal experimentation. In this class we will read from a variety of major Victorian poets such as Christina Rossetti, Alfred Lord Tennyson, and Robert and Elizabeth Barrett Browning, to understand the pull and power of poetry during this crucial period, and along the way we will explore issues central to an understanding of Victorian culture writ large, concerning matters of sympathy and sentiment, realism and politics, form and beauty. We will also read non-canonical poets such as Augusta Webster, Amy Levy, and Michael Field.
