Section: 01
Semester: Fall - 2019
Credits: 3
Description:
This course offers an overview of literary production in the United States from roughly 1890 to the present. Our readings provide an understanding of the pivotal literary innovations and cultural changes during this time. Movements such as naturalism, realism, and modernism may be the subject of focus, as might changes in race and gender relations, immigration policies, regionalism, and the increasing shift from agricultural to urban/industrial economics. We will examine a range of literary texts and genres, diverse in content and form, with a multiplicity of voices and perspectives. Consequently, we will interrogate conceptions of what American literature was, is, and may become.
