Course details
Name: ENGL - 116
Title: WORLD LITERATURE COMING OF AGE THEME
Section: 01
Semester: Fall - 2019
Credits: 3
Description:
Coming-of-age stories mark a loss of innocence and represent the shift from childhood to adulthood. World literature emphasizes work outside the American or British literary canons; these international texts are generally written abroad and in other languages. In this introductory literature course, we will examine why short story writers from Africa, Asia, Europe, Latin and South America, and the Middle East use the theme of coming of age to describe their experiences after 1945, a period marked by the end of several global atrocities (the Holocaust, the Atom Bomb, colonialism) and the beginning of new revolutions for individuals, communities, and nations. Students will be expected to purchase a hard copy of the required text for this course, “Into the Widening World: International Coming-of-Age Stories” (ISBN 978-0892552047/Persea Books), edited by John Loughery, since electronic devices are not allowed. Some texts may be assigned and provided in pdf format, but will not constitute more than 20 printed pages over the semester. Students will leave the course with practice in focused attention and discussion, closely analyzing texts, drafting essays, and revising their own work. Satisfies for all students: GER F1, Great Works & their Influences. And for English majors: International Issues (3a); Women and Gender Studies (3c); and World Literature (Teacher Education).
