Title: CRITICAL APPROACHES TO LITERATURE

Section: 04

Semester: Fall - 2019

Credits: 3

Description:
This course will introduce students to theoretical analysis—that is literary interpretation that pays careful detail to language, its contexts, the ideologies that keeps it unstable, and the signifiers we often taken for granted. We will read traditional “primary” texts (novels, poems, short stories), criticism (writing that addresses specific works) and theory (writing that challenges our assumptions about society, gender, history, and race). Students will develop facility with several different ways of approaching texts and a more robust critical vocabulary for describing your observations and insights. Assignments include a series of short essays and a few longer assignments.
